Frequently Asked Questions About Drayage

Drayage transports cargo to nearby locations. In Hawaiʻi, drayage often comes into play when freight moves to and from the port or between warehouses.

The term drayage comes from the word dray, which is a term used to describe a type of cart that moves heavy loads. The horses that pulled these carts were called dray horses. Because the loads these carts carried heavy loads, the horses could only move them short distances. As a result, drayage became the standard term for moving cargo over short distances.

Drayage and long-haul trucking are mainly distinguished by distance. Drayage involves moving cargo over short distances. In fact, most drayage jobs can be completed in a single day. In contrast, long-haul trucking, as you might guess, involves moving freight over longer distances, sometimes over several days.

As a result, the type of equipment used will differ between the two. Long-haul trucks are designed for extended journeys, while drayage trucks only need to travel within a limited area.
